This architectural wonder was originally built 1,500 years ago as a Christian basilica. Since then, it has endured as a structural icon of the Turkey, similar to the Parthenon in Athens, or Alhambra in Granada. It’s not only the architecture that makes this building so important, it’s also the role it played in Istanbul’s history, whether in politics, religion or culture in general.

The Hagia Sophia is one of the best places in Istanbul to post on Instagram because of its remarkable structure. It features Orthodox design, complete with a semi-domed altar and mosaic-covered arches.

Of course, when Islam became the religion of the area, the Hagia Sophia became a mosque, and this too, changed its design. It was then covered with flowing Islamic calligraphy, and ornate medallions. That too, is when the dome was covered in gold calligraphy.

If you love places full of history and just a little bit of that haunted feeling, then the Basilica Cistern is for you. It’s an underground waterway tucked away underneath Sultanahmet Square. It’s also the oldest market of its kind on earth, and has become a true landmark of the city. It features literally thousands of shops and vendors, selling are sorts of spices, jewellery, clothing, food, relics and art.

If you really want to immerse yourself in the culture, make sure to try bargaining—you’re sure to get a better deal. Oh and you can definitely take photos of everything around you in the market, but be firm if the vendors try to sell you something you’re not interested in.
