Research has shown that spending time outdoors in the wild is good for our health. But before you wander off into the woods, it’s important that you are well prepared for any eventuality.
Please Remember What’s First
PRWF — the acronym to live your outdoor life by! This will give you the four priorities for survival and you should keep them in mind when packing for your trip. It stands for Protection, Rescue, Water and Food.
- Protection: shelter and clothing to keep you warm and safe from the elements
- Rescue: the things that will help you get rescued, either by yourself or by others
- Water: an essential part of life, without which you will perish within three to four days
- Food: you can survive for around three weeks without food, but hunger will quickly hamper your ability to make sensible decisions and sap you of your energy
With this in mind, here are some essential items to pack before embarking on your next outdoor adventure.
Bothy Bag
You can never be sure when the weather may turn on you and throw a storm into your path. A Bothy Bag is a group shelter that you can use to take refuge from the wind and rain and is compact enough to fit into a little bag. These come in different sizes depending on the numbers in your group, and they give you the chance to warm up, snack, chat and snooze until the worst of the weather has passed.
Spare Layers
Layering is a great way to keep yourself warm, but having spare layers in your bag not only gives you added warmth, but they can also be used to change into should you get wet. Always try and pack some spare socks, gloves, hat and a fleece.
Firelighters
Make sure you always carry matches or a reliable lighter. However, in the instance that these methods let you down, it is prudent to know how to light a fire from scratch.
First Aid Kit
Minor injuries are common when adventuring outdoors and a simple kit will usually tide you over. Of course, for longer or more adventurous trips, it is advisable for at least one member of your party to do some first aid training.
Compass
In the event that something goes wrong with your technology, it is vital to have a compass on hand. Without one you will usually find yourself navigating in circles and you can’t always rely on your mobile to stay dry or indeed keep its battery going.
Knife
A knife has multiple uses and is an essential part of any kit. From clearing paths, to gutting fish and starting fires, it’s worth investing in a knife that will stand the test of time. Consider a knife–making kit from Self Reliance Outfitters.
Water Purifying Bottle
Water is essential and you will soon perish without it. A water purifying bottle on hand will make water from streams and rivers instantly drinkable.
Energy Bars
These don’t take up much space, and are invaluable if you get caught short without food.
