Free weekend activities in London

Everyone is feeling the pinch right now, so expensive weekend getaways or trips to fancy events may not be high on the list of priorities, but here are some activities and events you can enjoy in London without having to spend a penny.

London street

British Library

A must for book lovers, located just a short distance from King’s Cross Station, the British Library is the perfect place to spend a free afternoon or even a full day. With dedicated reading rooms, multiple coffee spots, and a restaurant, you won’t be short of space to get lost in a good book.

There aren’t just books on offer, the library also hosts a range of free exhibitions and events covering all sorts of topics from food to science.

If you are hoping to visit regularly, it is well worth registering for a free reader pass, giving you access to the vast collection of books on offer.

Southbank Centre

Located right in the centre of London, the Southbank Centre is made up of a variety of venues including the Royal Festival Hall and the National Poetry Library. Hosting a wide range of exhibitions, events and even festivals, plenty of which are free to attend, you will never be bored during a trip to the Southbank Centre. From singing to storytelling, and their famous food market, this is truly a destination for the whole family to enjoy.

Each of the seven venues has slightly differing opening times so make sure to check these before your visit.

Tate Modern

London is synonymous with Tate Modern. With free admission and over a hundred years of art, this is the ideal gallery to lose a full day in. Arguably showcasing the biggest range of art in the city, from modernist expression to gravity-defying sculptures, you are sure to have your mind blown.

Open all year round besides December 24th-26th, it is recommended to visit the gallery at the start or end of the day to experience its quietest times. While the gallery is free to visit, some exhibitions are charged so make sure to check online beforehand.

God’s Own Junkyard

If you’re looking for something a little alternative, God’s Own Junkyard could be just the spot. A museum cram packed with the world’s coolest neon signs; this is an Instagram lover’s dream. Set up by Chris Bracey, the mastermind behind some of the most iconic signs from films such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Batman, there is no one better to collate such a collection.

Featuring an impressive collection of retrieved and repaired neon signs, movie props and retro displays, you won’t know where to look first. Professional cameras are not allowed but you are free to snap away as much as you’d like using your phone.

This venue is sometimes closed for private events so don’t forget to double-check online to make sure it is open to visitors. Why not make a day of it and visit their Rolling Scones café while you’re there?
