Millions of tourists flock to London every year for short and long stays, exploring the streets of the British capital taking in popular sights such as the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye and Buckingham Palace. You know, the usual stuff.
However, if you are a Londoner, or are simply well-acquainted with the city already, those attractions likely won’t bother you too much. After all, you’ve been there and done that – you want something a little bit different if you are planning a weekend in the city. The good news is, there are many options open for you and your travelling party to make the most of your short break, some of which we will look at here.
Leicester Square
One of the best places to head to for a bite to eat and for a spot of gaming if casino games are your thing. Admittedly, this certainly won’t make for a quiet afternoon lunch, but if you are looking for vibrant nightlife then you are in for a good time. The street also sees regular outdoor performers for the crowds of people to enjoy – this could be anything from magicians, singers, comedy acts and dance groups.
There are always new and exciting events happening in Leicester Square, meaning that you will never get bored. Much better than taking hundreds of pictures of the same building!
Jack the Ripper Tour
Are you the type of individual who enjoys a touch of gruesome history? If so, then head to London’s East End district of Whitechapel where you can join a Jack the Ripper walking tour that will take you to each of the murder scenes of the Canonical Five. If you haven’t heard of London’s most revered serial killer, there are comparisons drawn with Ted Bundy due to the killers’ sick and twisted styles.
In fact, you will find that walking tours are popular in the city, with many a gruesome tale waiting to be told. The best part is that many tours also include a stop off at the local watering hole, so you can get the festivities started as you explore the parts of London you never considered worthwhile.
Borough Market
Forget about the diet when you are spending your weekend in London because it is here that you can indulge in some of the best street food anywhere in the world. Borough Market, located a stone’s throw away from London Bridge, is a must for any self-respecting foodie to visit with stalls aplenty. Widely regarded as the best place to find delicious fresh food anywhere in the UK, your weekend simply wouldn’t be complete without a visit.
There has been a market of some description on the location since the 12th century, so it is certainly a place steeped in history with a proud reputation to uphold. As well as gorgeous street food, you can also find other favourites such as family butchers, fruit and veg stalls and bakeries – you could quite easily come here for your monthly shop!
Historic Pub Crawl
If you are coming for a weekend away, no doubt you will be eager to down a tipple or two and what better way than to visit some of London’s most famous boozers? Pubs such as The Dove, The Lamb & Flag and The Mayflower all have their own place in the city’s history, which makes for a fantastic pub crawl.
With plenty to get stuck into, even for the most seasoned of London travellers, you can enjoy a weekend out that won’t be awash with common tourists discovering the city for the very first time.
