Summer is a few months away and many of us will be traveling to Europe. Instead of visiting the typical European vacation destinations, why not consider somewhere more off the beaten path? You can avoid high prices and crowds by traveling somewhere that has yet to be discovered by everyone. Here are some of my favorite hidden travel gems in Europe you must visit.
Naxos, Greece
When most people think about the Greek Islands, they picture the famous but touristy islands of Mykonos and Santorini. While those are beautiful islands, my favorite Greek island is Naxos. Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades islands, which also include Mykonos and Santorini. While there are still tourists in Naxos, their numbers are not as large.
There are many things to do in Naxos including visiting sandy beaches, mountain villages, ancient ruins and a historic castle. Be sure to check out Portara, a marble gate and the symbol of Naxos.
Naxos is easily reached by ferry but there is also an airport for those that prefer to fly. Naxos is perfect for visitors of all ages and it is also family friendly.
Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy
Santa Margherita Ligure is a beautiful town in the Italian Riviera but it is not as well known as nearby Italian hotspots such as Cinque Terre and Portofino. Visitors can walk along the beautiful harbor full of yachts and fishing boats and enjoy the town beach.
Unlike the crowded Cinque Terre villages, Santa Margherita is not full of tourists. You can still visit Cinque Terre, as it is about an hour away by train. Santa Margherita is only about 6 km from Portofino but it is far less expensive. Portofino can be easily be reached from Santa Margherita by walking, bus or ferry.
Sibiu, Romania
Romania does not receive as much attention as other countries in Europe but it is a beautiful country worth visiting. One of the most beautiful places in Romania is the historic city of Sibiu which is located in Transylvania. Sibiu is really picturesque with cobblestone streets, large squares and beautiful churches.

Do you have a hidden gem in Europe you’re willing to share?
We had Santa Margherita in our itinerary and trimmed it out and ever since then have kicked ourselves. Lesson learned. Time to go back anyways…
I will be visiting Europe for the first time this spring and can’t wait to explore some places you’ve listed! Thanks for sharing ๐
Hope you make it to some of these spots. Have a great trip Cat!
I loved Naxos! And Paros, the island next to it is even cuter. You created a nice list, quite a few places to add to my bucket list ๐

Yes I’ve been to Paros and I loved it as well!
I’ve not even heard of Sibiu or Naxos! They look like hidden gems! Now I’m running out of new cites to visit, the lesser know places are becoming more tempting.
We agree about Romania. It’s beauty and rich culture really surprised us. All these off beat places sound fantastic.
